About the school’s needs

The communities where the students come from are La Nueva Israel, Fortaleza, Colonia Buenos Aires, Colonia El Carmelo, 10 de Noviembre, Minerva, Tutunichapa, Atonal, l5 de Mayo, Ayutuxtepeque, Toluca, among others.

Many of these communities suffered, for many years, from a lack of opportunities and stigmatization, because the levels of violence were very high.

The educational complex was considered a "neutral" zone, especially in those moments when there was a high incidence of gangs, since then it has been a place of opportunity for children and adolescents from different metropolitan areas.

Help give the children of the Complejo Educativo Capitán General Gerardo Barrios the future they deserve.

    Meet the students

    Karla

“I am Karla, a 17-year-old student who enjoys reading and writing in my free time.

I am currently studying at the Complejo Educativo Capitán General Gerardo Barrios. I believe that one of the main challenges facing young people in my community is avoiding bad influences and stigma.

That is why I would like us as young people to have safe spaces where we can develop so that we can overcome the prejudices and stereotypes our community has about us.

My dream for our school is to see it as a safe place where we are not afraid to express ourselves and can be ourselves without fear of being judged or belittled. Also, I want it to be a more welcoming and friendly space where everyone feels comfortable.”

    —Karla, 17

    Misael

“My name is Misael, I am 16 years old and my dream is to achieve personal success, finish my studies, and be an exemplary person to help my family in the future.

In my free time, I enjoy watching movies, listening to music, and doing activities such as homework or playing sports like basketball and wrestling. I believe that young people in the community face a lack of recreational spaces and a social stigma that persists in our area.

My dream would be to see more freedom in the streets and to end the prejudices against the youth in our community.

For my school, I would like to see more support for inclusivity, such as training for teachers on how to teach people with disabilities, so that all students have equal educational opportunities”.

    —Misael, 16

    Meet the principal

“I am César, Director of the Capitán General Gerardo Barrios Educational Complex.

One of our biggest challenges is to improve the quality of education, involving all stakeholders in a process based on values and respect for the law. As for the community, we seek that parents actively participate in educational decisions and that students have access to extracurricular activities.

Our students face socio-emotional problems, lack of family support, and economic difficulties daily.

For us, the school represents a direct benefit for girls and boys to receive education and training in values, as well as a refuge where they can escape the pressures of home and socialize with their peers. Our biggest dream is to improve academic performance and have a new infrastructure with adequate spaces.

Over the years, we have faced challenges such as the presence of gangs and the deterioration of the school caused by Tropical Storm Julia in 2022, but we have come out ahead with repairs using our own resources. Our school is a safe, welcoming, and peaceful place, with extracurricular options and accessible to all.”

    —Principal César
