About the school and its community

Centro Escolar República de Canadá is located in Las Palmas, a densely populated community of approximately 11,000 people in San Salvador’s Colonia San Benito. Although it sits near museums, cultural institutions, businesses, and some of the capital’s most prosperous neighborhoods, families in Las Palmas have historically faced significant economic hardship and limited access to opportunity.

The community was severely affected by the 1986 earthquake, after which residents organized to rebuild their homes and strengthen the neighborhood. Las Palmas later became associated with crime and violence, leaving residents isolated and the community deeply stigmatized. In recent years, security conditions have improved, but young people must still overcome neighborhood misconceptions.

Las Palmas is defined by strong community organization. Glasswing has worked alongside the school and community since 2010 to create opportunities for children. Community members volunteer as mentors, lead after-school clubs and sports, and organize activities for families. In 2016, Las Palmas celebrated the first high-school graduating class in the neighborhood’s history, a source of enormous pride for residents and an important challenge to the way the community had long been perceived.

Still, challenges remain. Students need more academic and emotional support, and the effects of the pandemic have made those needs even more urgent. Strengthening family involvement for youth in the Las Palmas community is also essential for their growth and development.

By sponsoring Centro Escolar República de Canadá, you will help create a safe and supportive school where students can learn, grow, and feel that they belong. Your support will strengthen academic, mental health, and youth development programs, giving young people the tools and opportunities to shape their own futures and rethink what's possible.

Help give the children of the Centro Escolar República de Canadá the future they deserve.

    Meet the principal

“I am Laura, the principal of the Republic of Canada School.

Our school faces several challenges, from the need to strengthen academic and emotional support for students—especially in the aftermath of the pandemic—to improving infrastructure to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment.

In addition, we must overcome our limited resources and promote greater involvement and collaboration among parents, so we can provide more effective support to students in their educational process.

The school remains a beacon of hope and opportunity for our community. We strive to cultivate a welcoming and nurturing environment where each student can develop to his or her fullest potential.

We believe in the transformative power of education and the critical role it plays in empowering students to become engaged and aware citizens.

    —Principal Laura
