About the school’s needs

The community of Montserrat faces significant challenges, including increased levels of youth violence and high dropout rates.

Fear of stigma, such as that associated with gang membership, has driven many young people away from the education system, exacerbating the gap between the community and the school.

However, there is the potential for change and revitalization. The school is committed to working closely with residents to overcome these challenges and build a brighter future for students.

Help give the children of the Instituto Nacional Profesor Jaime Francisco López the future they deserve.

What your sponsorship does at this school

    • Improve academic offerings to attract more students, especially in areas such as a baccalaureate in health, which requires an equipped laboratory and other resources
    • Overcome the historical stigmatization of the institute due to previous association with gangs
    • Provide effective psychological help for students, who often face family abandonment and are growing up in problematic environments
    • Renovate infrastructure to improve study conditions and student comfort; examples include a roofed court, science and robotics laboratories, a peace band, permanent and equipped classrooms, an adequate dining room, and a functional teachers’ lounge
    • Facilitate student transportation and meet the district’s basic educational needs
    • Improve educational conditions and the quality of life in the community, given the scarcity of local resources

    Meet the students

    Mariana

“I am 17 years old, and I like spending time with my family and friends. Someday, I would like to be in the media and be a presenter. The biggest dream I have is that we will no longer be victims of stigmatization because of the lack of opportunities in the community.

With Sponsor a School’s support, I believe we could be provided with entrepreneurship ideas that would add to our curriculum.

I want my institute to be seen as a place where we can excel, but it needs support to fix the infrastructure.”

    —Mariana, 17

    Alexis

“I’m 16. I like to watch movies, and my dream in the short term is to graduate from high school. I’ve seen that the young people in my community have a lot of potential and have very creative skills, but they don’t have the opportunity to show them because we don’t have the resources.

That’s why I would like to improve the infrastructure of my high school. It would be a very good incentive to help students like me develop or discover skills.

    —Alexis, 16

    Meet a teacher

“My name is Jaime, and I am the director of the Instituto Nacional Profesor Jaime Francisco López, the only middle school in District 01 in San Salvador.

Our institute struggles to break the stigmatization toward our students and their families affected by violence. Students from the community seek to specialize in various careers, but we are currently only offering general high school.

This institute is an opportunity for academic improvement, a space for recreation for the students.

My greatest hope is to take advantage of the space, to offer technological services so that through learning, we can eradicate youth violence, reduce school dropout rates, and improve family coexistence and community cohesion.”

    —Teacher Jaime
