About the school’s needs
Zone 14 of Guatemala City presents a marked contrast between affluence and scarcity. Although a significant sector of the population with high income levels and access to financial resources resides there, that sector coexist with communities facing deprivation and economic limitations.
This affluent stratum, characterized by luxurious homes, exclusive services and developed infrastructure, contrasts sharply with the realities of those who struggle to meet their basic needs in the same environment. Economic disparity is manifested not only in the gap between lifestyles but also in urban planning decisions that prioritize the development of expensive apartments and shopping centers to the detriment of the needs of the most vulnerable populations.
Help give the children of the Instituto por cooperativa Oscar Berger the future they deserve.

“Hello, my name is Aminta, and I am 15 years old. My biggest dream is to become a veterinary doctor so I can help the animals I love so much. Since I was a little girl, I have felt a deep connection with them and I am determined to dedicate my life to their care and well-being.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading books and online resources that bring me one step closer to my goal. But I also value the importance of friendship and fun, so I enjoy hanging out with my friends and sharing good times. However, I cannot ignore the challenges facing my community. One of the biggest problems is the fact that many young people are left home alone due to their parents’ long working hours and the presence of violence in our environment. This situation not only exposes young people to physical and emotional danger but also leaves them vulnerable to marginalization.
My dream is to see this issue addressed in a comprehensive and effective manner. I would like to see a change in society’s perception of these young people. I want them to stop being seen as victims and instead be recognized for their potential. In addition, it is essential that parents have better employment opportunities and access to resources that will allow them to provide a safe and stable environment for their children. I would love to see the implementation of painting, artistic expression and computer workshops that stimulate creativity and the development of practical skills that are useful in the modern world.”

Some of the challenges we face in my community are the lack of basic services such as electricity and drinkable water. Scarcity of economic resources, child labor, violence and drug addiction also affect many of my neighbors and friends. My dream for my community is that we stop being victims of stigmatization and that new doors of opportunity open for everyone. I wish for parents to have access to better job opportunities, which would not only improve their quality of life but also have a direct impact on the well-being of their children.
As for my school, I would love to see workshops for artistic expression, computer science and natural sciences that promote creativity, critical thinking and the learning of skills needed in today’s world. In addition, it would be wonderful to have courts and fields in better conditions for practicing sports, as well as a remodeling of the restrooms to ensure a more comfortable and healthy school environment for everyone.”

Here, our students don’t only acquire knowledge, but they also cultivate fundamental values that will guide their steps on the path of life. We pride ourselves on being much more than an educational center; we are a space where the human experience is intertwined with the learning process.
Our approach goes beyond the transmission of information; we seek to foster experience and coexistence between our students and teachers. We want everyone to feel that they are not only mere receivers of knowledge but also active participants in their own growth and development. Here, each student is valued and respected as a unique individual with his or her own abilities, dreams and aspirations.
We firmly believe that by investing in the growth and development of our youth, we are improving the present and sowing the seeds for a brighter and more promising future as a country and community.”
