About the school’s needs

Like many schools across Latin America, Escuela Urbana Moisés Sáenz was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Jean Gough, UNICEF’s Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, has noted that, “Latin America and the Caribbean have already lost more than ten years of learning progress due to two years of COVID-19 school closures. The education catastrophe is still going on, day after day.”

Post-COVID recovery is just one of the challenges at Escuela Urbana Moisés Sáenz. Another is its location in Colonia Santa María la Ribera, in the Cuauhtémoc borough of Mexico City. The area is experiencing gentrification, a process that brings its own obstacles and marks a before-and-after for current inhabitants and new generations. Resources are lacking, and the socioeconomic level is medium-low.

In this environment, the teaching team at Escuela Urbana Moisés Sáenz works diligently to improve students’ education. They rely on the support of parents, who contribute to the maintenance of the school. Your support would vastly improve conditions, providing both basic infrastructure needs and invaluable psychosocial aid.

Help children at Escuela Urbana Moisés Sáenz thrive. Your sponsorship will mean a school environment that nurtures learning and development.

Help give the children of Escuela Urbana Moisés Sáenz the future they deserve.

    Meet the students

    Valeria

“I’m Valeria Jocelyn, and I’m 14 years old. My short-term dream is to finish junior high with a good average. Long-term, I want to become a pediatrician. I enjoy spending time with my family and writing poems.

In my community, young people face challenges like addiction and bad influences. We’re at an age when we learn many things, and the people we socialize with have a big influence on us.

Although my school is large and beautiful, I would like to have more activities that the entire community can participate in. And I’d like to see improvements like proper maintenance and more technology for learning.”

    —Valeria, 14

    Tomás

“I’m Tomás Alejandro, I’m 13 years old, and my dream is to be the best basketball player in the world. In my free time, I like to play basketball, be with my family, and play board games.

In our community, we face challenges like infrastructure damage and security issues. I dream of more police stations, not running out of water, and better traffic control.

At school, I would like to see the walls painted and repairs made to the bathrooms and roofs. And I would like a cafeteria with affordable prices for everyone.”

    —Tomás, 13

    Meet the principal

“At our school, Moisés Sáenz, we face challenges with courage and dedication. Our main challenge is to promote learning, especially for students who were affected by confinement during COVID-19. In the community, we struggle with security issues, fights, and the generation of garbage. Our students face daily obstacles to arrive on time, but we work tirelessly to improve their education.

We have faced difficult situations such as thefts and damage during confinement, but we overcome them with the committed support of parents. Despite limited resources, they share their valuable experience for the school’s maintenance. Moisés Sáenz aims to be a center of academic excellence, inclusivity, and collaboration, where each contributed resource is used effectively to strengthen educational work and improve facilities.”

    —Director Eugenia Lucas
