About the school’s needs

Tapachula is a city of about 353,000 near the Mexico-Guatemala border. It is a diverse area, with migrants and Indigenous communities, mainly of Maya origin.

The problems the Tapachula community faces concern safety, addiction, the economy, and overall health and wellness. Community members are greatly affected by diseases such as dengue and malaria. As the local economy is founded on agriculture and trade, there are also challenges in creating new opportunities for children.

The school is an important part of the community. There are no nearby clinics or parks, so the children rely on the school for wellness and recreation. The school plays such a vital role as a meeting center that on weekends, the grounds are left open for children and adolescents to go and play.

Your sponsorship of Escuela Primaria Marcos Enrique Becerra provides crucial support to this educational hub. It will permit the construction of a computer center, library, and additional learning environments as well as support in violence prevention and other critical issues.

Help give the children of Escuela Primaria Marcos Enrique Becerra the future they deserve.

    Meet the students

    Estella

“I’m Estrella. I dream of becoming a marine biologist. In my free time, I love to draw, paint, read, and watch TV.

In my community, many children face challenges, like insecurity in the streets or not being able to afford school supplies or uniforms.

My dream is for everyone to be safe, and to help migrants more. Also, I would love to see my school become more beautiful, with benches in the garden, fun games, and classrooms with air conditioning.”

    —Estella, 11

    Damián

“Hello! I’m Damián Emilio, I’m 10 years old, and my big dream is to be a teacher when I grow up. In my free time, I love to play and draw.

Here in my community, we face security challenges. Children have been kidnapped.

My dream is for my community to not be a dangerous place anymore. I would like to see my school be more colorful, with a library, a kitchen where we can eat breakfast, and a computer room to learn more.”

    —Damián, 10

    Meet the principal

In our school, we face significant challenges, but we believe that every challenge is an opportunity to transform lives.

The low educational level of the children is a major challenge for their development, while the lack of a roof on our sports court—within a community that can reach temperatures of 40°C—is an obstacle to their healthy recreation.

In our community, which is marked by migration, insecurity, and a lack of dignified health services, the school becomes a vital refuge for the children. We even welcome them on weekends, to provide a space where they can play and socialize healthily. Our students need more suitable spaces for learning and security in their daily lives, as we have been targeted in three thefts.

However, we maintain hope for improvement and aspire to be a beacon of change. We dream of a safer and more comfortable environment. We want to make our small, welcoming, and colorful school full of happy children an even more inspiring and transformative place for the community.”
