About the school’s needs

Colonia Castillo Lara is in Zone 7 of Guatemala City, an area known for its historic and traditional architecture. An increase in local crime has created an atmosphere of insecurity, disrupting the peace and well-being of the community.

The presence of gangs contributes to a heightened sense of risk, with drug-distribution points adding extra danger and complexity to daily life. Marginalization, a lack of jobs, and the absence of basic services pose more difficulties, leaving many residents vulnerable.

Addressing these challenges requires strategies to tackle security concerns and foster development. The goal is to make Colonia Castillo Lara safer, more inclusive, and more prosperous for all its inhabitants.

By sponsoring Escuela Oficial Urbana No. 32 República Oriental del Uruguay, you will be providing key resources to its students. Your sponsorship means everything from mental health support to new educational and recreational equipment for the school.

Help give the children of República Oriental del Uruguay the future they deserve.

    Meet the students

    Eddy

“My name is Eddy, and I am 12 years old. My dream is to be a firefighter. In my free time, I like to play soccer with my friends. It helps me clear my head and release energy.

The challenges that kids in my community face are that there are few spaces to play, and it becomes dangerous to play in different areas.

I wish that, in my community, we would be happy, and that all people would have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams. I would like my school to have more access to technology, and to have computer classes.”

    —Eddy, 12

    Kenneth

“My name is Kenneth, and I am 12 years old. My dream is to become a police officer, to have an active role in caring for my community.

In my free time, I like to create my own comics. I write the stories and draw the illustrations.

In my community, it’s a challenge for children to believe in themselves. Adults pigeonhole us into certain stereotypes, and it’s difficult to get out of those, which is why children don’t believe in their abilities.

I would also like us all to be cleaner and no longer litter the streets with garbage.

At my school, I would like there to be a well-equipped kitchen, so we can enjoy healthy breakfasts.”

    —Kenneth, 12

    Meet the principal

“I am Loida, the principal of Escuela Oficial Urbana Para Varones No. 32 República Oriental del Uruguay. In our school, the primary challenge is to expand the student population to ensure sustained growth in attendance for the upcoming year. In the community, we grapple with the challenge of providing young people with a safe environment that shields them from violence and drugs, as we are situated in an area affected by the sale of narcotics and by extortion and the presence of gangs.

Every day, students face the need to receive effective guidance from their parents, to overcome obstacles and prepare for future roles. Ensuring active parental involvement in their educational processes is crucial. The school, for me, represents a beacon of hope, offering free education in a serene environment that is conducive to studying, with spaces that allow students to relax and enjoy the educational process.

My greatest aspiration for the school is to achieve an optimal educational level, where students, teachers, and parents are actively involved, fostering the development of good character and building a solid foundation for the next level of study.

    —Principal Loida
