About the school’s needs
The community of La Esperanza in the municipality of Villa Nueva, Guatemala, faces several challenges. Harmonious coexistence between parents and young people in conflict with the law is one of them, affected by the lack of support from the Ministry of Education (MINEDUC), which has abandoned the community in terms of education.
Students in this area lack the necessary support from their parents, both in their studies and in their physical and mental well-being. The economic scarcity in households leads young people to start working at an early age, thus neglecting their education and opportunities.
In addition, the community has faced adverse situations such as violence, robberies, and natural disasters such as storms and floods due to poor drainage, which has caused water seepage both in educational establishments and in the homes of the inhabitants. These problems have exposed multiple vulnerabilities in the community, where violence and the influence of marginal groups have generated fear among the inhabitants in their daily activities.
Help give the children of the Escuela Oficial Urbana Mixta Sol Naciente the future they deserve.

“Hi, I’m Esteysi and I’m 9 years old. My biggest dream is to become an artist, specifically a professional singer. In my free time, I enjoy reading stories and stories, playing with my siblings and friends, and spending time with my family.
In my community, I have noticed several challenges. There are many young people working on the streets and not going to school. There are also parents who are involved in drugs. I would like parents to pay more attention to their children’s education and be responsible with their care.
I like my school, but I dream of having a well-equipped school. I would love to have computers, a good roof that doesn’t leak when it rains, internet access and cleaning services.
Also, it would be great to have teachers who specialize in computers, as well as cooking and carpentry workshops. I would like the school to be nicely painted and in good condition so that I can enjoy it to the fullest.”

In my community and at school, I don’t like that there is a lot of bullying among my peers. I would like teachers to be more aware of this issue and be able to intervene to stop it, as well as involve parents in the solution.
I dream of seeing my school more beautiful. I would love for the courts to have a roof to protect us from the heat and rain, for us to have computer teachers and updated computers, and for the classrooms to have fans to make classes more comfortable.”

Read more ▼“I am Isaí, director of the Escuela Oficial Urbana Mixta Sol Naciente in La Esperanza. Our main challenge is to guarantee quality basic education for our students in an environment where many face a lack of family support due to economic necessity that leads children to work from an early age, neglecting their education. We also deal with problems such as family disintegration, the presence of youth in conflict with the law, low wages and the influence of gangs in the area.
The school not only offers education but also provides essential services such as food support and child care. We strive to be a community meeting place where we seek solutions and access vital services.
My greatest hope is to provide quality education to our students, complemented by hands-on workshops that provide them with skills to enhance their future opportunities, such as cooking, blacksmithing and aesthetics.
Although we are a small school, we are well equipped, organized and committed to our work. We appreciate the support of those who contribute to the development of our students and encourage others to join us in improving education in La Esperanza. The youth of our community deserve quality education and adequate spaces to learn and grow in. The school is a vital center in our community, where students receive an education and where parents actively participate in programs to resolve conflicts and improve the quality of life for all.”
—Director Isaí
