About the school’s needs

In Zone 14 in Guatemala City, there is a stark contrast between plenty and scarcity. Part of the area is an affluent enclave with luxurious homes. That population sharply juxtaposes the communities where people strive to fulfill their most basic needs.

The economic disparity in Zone 14 deeply affects the populations there, and it also affects urban planning. Planning decisions prioritize the development of upscale apartments and shopping centers, often at the expense of the pressing needs of communities in vulnerable situations.

Balancing the coexistence of wealth and poverty demands thoughtful strategies to foster an inclusive, equitable, and sustainable society. One crucial element in nurturing opportunity is education. Your support of Zone 14’s Escuela Oficial Urbana Mixta No. 146 Lic. Eduardo Cáceres Lehnhoff will mean a range of essential services, from teacher training to nutrition programs to psychological counseling.

Help give the children of Escuela Oficial Urbana Mixta No. 146 Lic. Eduardo Cáceres Lehnhoff the future they deserve.

    Meet the students

    Areli

“My name is Areli. I’m eight. I want to graduate from high school and study to be a doctor.

In my free time, I like to paint pictures of animals, my family, and my friends.

I know that in my community, children fight among themselves. There are a lot of hits and insults. This makes it difficult for them to become friends, and there’s a lot of division between people. I wish they could all get along, so there would be less problems and violence.”

    —Areli, 8

    Eliseo

“I’m Eliseo, and I’m 11 years old. My dream is to graduate and have a good job, to help my mother with expenses.

In my free time, I like to go to the park to walk or play soccer.

In my community, children suffer a lot of violence, both physical and verbal. It feels like we aren’t respected because we’re kids. This causes kids to become violent and repeat this at school or the park. I would like for no one to be mistreated with bad words anymore.

I would like my school to have better bathrooms and a painted area for sports.”

    —Eliseo, 11

    Meet a teacher

“I am Ana Lourdes, I am 60 years old, and I am a primary school teacher.

One of the challenges we have is to prepare students for a competitive life. In this community, we want to form citizens who are capable of facing things in life and giving their best.

This school is an opportunity to learn and prepare for the future. Here, we support new generations so they can reach their full potential. I hope the children can gain tools for good learning and use them in the future.

As a result of the pandemic, there was a setback in the subjects of mathematics and language; on a general level, children must make an effort to return to these topics.

We have had difficulties maintaining the school’s infrastructure. At the moment, we have difficulties with services related to sanitation. There is a lack of water and electricity. We spent two years without electricity, and the electrical system still has problems.

This center is a place willing to receive all those who wish to study and learn, providing the necessary support so they can develop. We receive them with open arms.”

    —Teacher Ana Lourdes
