About the school’s needs
The municipality of Villa Nueva is in Zone 12 El Mezquital in Guatemala. The community faces increased violence and the nearby presence of gang hotspots. This area is affected by an increase in the percentage of parents involved in gang-related crime, such as extortion and drug sales. These gangs recruit many young people in the community, adding to the cycle of violence.
The area also carries a strong social stigma. People consider it a “red-light district” because of the high crime. This stigma impacts how people see the community and hurts the self-esteem and opportunities of its residents.
Help give the children of Escuela Oficial Urbana Mixta El Mezquital JM the future they deserve.

“Hello, I’m Osman José, and I’m 13 years old. My dream is to become a lawyer because I believe that, through the law, I can help my community tackle challenges and create positive change.
During my free time, I like reading books or playing with my friends.
The kids in my community have difficulties. The lack of money sometimes stops us from getting a good education. My dream is to have more public schools or opportunities, so everyone has equal opportunities to learn and grow.
I would love to see improvements to my school. Sometimes the classrooms have leaks and damaged roofs. I dream of a space that is safe, inspiring, and equipped with the tools to help us achieve our goals.”

I think it’s crucial to have psychologists at school. They can support children facing problems and give them the necessary help.
I want my school to be more vibrant and clean. It should have an educational environment that celebrates diversity. There should be support to keep it clean and welcoming. I envision having someone who’s dedicated to cleanliness, who would contribute to an environment that supports learning and creativity.”

Our students are talented, but they face limitations due to insufficient resources and a scarcity of job opportunities.
The stigma of red-light districts adds extra difficulty. It hurts the self-esteem of our young people. Still, I firmly believe that this ground is fertile, capable of cultivating success even in the face of adversity.
Our commitment is to uplift a community that has long been neglected. Increased investment is essential to provide opportunities for our students and transform their realities. We are dedicated to promoting the personal and professional development of our youth through initiatives like occupational workshops. These resources will not only empower our students but also equip them to navigate the challenging environment in which they live.
Our determination lies in focusing on collective goals that will pave the way for a more prosperous future.”
