About the school’s needs

Many of the students at Centro Escolar Margarita Durán have to abandon their studies early. The reason: their families’ economic needs take over, and young people are called to contribute. Poverty is one of the main struggles in the area; numerous families are part of the informal economic sector.

Stigma and the breakdown of families have also affected opportunities in the region. Against this backdrop, Centro Escolar Margarita Durán is a space where students from low-income families can come for both academic advancement and psychosocial support. Your sponsorship will mean everything from basic infrastructure needs (such as a cistern to supply water) to psychological support, extracurricular activities, and vocational workshops.

Help students at Centro Escolar Margarita Durán to understand that their community believes in them—and that the future is full of hope and opportunity.

Help give the children of Centro Escolar Margarita Durán the future they deserve.

    Meet the students

    Adriana

“I’m Adriana, and I’m 14. I really like to dance. My dream is to become a forensic doctor because I’ve always been fascinated by investigation.

Even though I come from a place with low aspirations to move forward, I would like to see my community offer opportunities for all girls to pursue education and get professional guidance.

I’d like our school to have adequate resources for infrastructure for each age group, plus a well-furnished cooking space. I’d also like it to be a much more spacious environment for everyone.”

    Yasmín

“I’m Yasmín. I’m 17. I love drawing and music. My aspiration is to study medicine and work in a hospital or clinic.

Where I live, there’s little support from parents for self-improvement or choosing an academic career. Economic needs often get prioritized. So my hope is for our school to expand to include high school, which will let many students continue their studies. A comfortable and well-equipped learning space could serve as motivation for them to pursue their academic goals.”

     —Yasmín, 17

    Meet the director

“My name is Lourdes, and I’m the director of the Centro Escolar Margarita Durán. I firmly believe that one of the most significant challenges at our school is fostering greater awareness of the pivotal role that education plays in the life of each student. Since our school’s inception, we have been dedicated to serving female students, the majority of whom come from families with a high risk of violence, limited opportunities for self-improvement, and the weight of stereotypes.

This commitment propels us to be an institution that not only imparts academic knowledge but also provides vital emotional support through values and counseling. It hasn’t been easy, but we hope to transform our school into a safe haven for each student.

It is not merely my dream but a shared vision that our school might have the necessary resources for infrastructure and learning tools. This, in turn, will empower our students to excel. They will see that there are many people who are genuinely interested in helping them achieve their dreams and, in the process, bring about positive transformations in their personal lives and broader community.”

     —Lourdes Reyes de Campos
