About the school’s needs
The community of Villa Tzu-Chi was created after two earthquakes struck El Salvador in early 2001. The death toll exceeded a thousand people, while thousands more were injured. Hundreds of thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed.
Over the years, the community has been afflicted by high levels of violence and crime. In 2022, a report on ElSalvador.com described how, “After 21 years on the map, to mention Villa Tzu Chi is to refer to gangs, violence, injustice and insecurity.” The situation has improved, yet many challenges persist. Opportunities remain limited for young people, the community faces continued stigma, and economic struggles are ongoing.
Help give the children of Centro Escolar Caserío Villa Esperanza the future they deserve.

Brindy
“My name is Brindy, and I’m a 15-year-old student at Caserío Villa Esperanza. My dream is to become a medical examiner.
Despite facing many challenges, like discrimination and a lack of support from my community, my vision for my future is one of educational empowerment and acceptance.
With a sponsored school, I hope that every student can be empowered and encouraged too.”

“I’m Jairo, a 16-year-old aspiring musician with a passion for music. During my free time, I love to sketch, watch soccer, go to church, and help tutor in math.
In our community, economic instability and limited opportunities create adversity. On top of that, we face discrimination. I hope for a future where my peers and I can access support and opportunities, and where our community thrives.”

Our school faces many challenges, including breaking the stigma associated with our youth and community, which had been affected by violence. Years ago, it was normal to hear gunfire, and we needed to protect the kids under their desks. But our community has evolved since then.
Now we face the task of eradicating the stigma, stereotypes, and discrimination that still persist. Each day, we work tirelessly to instill in our students both enthusiasm and a sense of hope the minute they step foot in our school.
Our school has become a safe haven for our students. Some want to spend their entire day here, as they find not only a place of education but also a feeling of pride and belonging.
Yet our aspirations stretch further. With improved infrastructure and robust educational opportunities after normal school hours, our students would have the ability to thrive.”
