About the school’s needs

Villanueva is a municipality in the department of Cortés. Its economic activities include the production of bananas, coffee and livestock. Despite being an area that thrives on agriculture and industry, this community is impacted by insecurity and lack of jobs. It is also affected by flooding during the rainy season.

The Manuel Bonilla school offers basic education to local children and young people and represents the identity of the neighborhood and the pride of the community.

Help give the children of the Centro de Educación Básica Manuel Bonilla the future they deserve.

    Meet the students

    Daniela

“My name is Daniela. I am 15 years old, and I study at Manuel Bonilla School.

My biggest dream is to study veterinary medicine because I love animals. I love to share with them; I visualize myself as an adult having a veterinary clinic and a shelter for homeless animals.

I had the opportunity to participate in the Extracurricular Clubs, and in my opinion, the one I liked the most was Glee, because in addition to learning to dance, I learned how to perform. I can fight shyness and be in front of an audience.

In the Glee Club I felt very happy. Dancing gave me peace, tranquility and helped me not to feel overwhelmed. It made me feel happy, which is a nice feeling. I was also in the Entre Jóvenes Club; I like this club a lot because they allowed us freedom of expression. I felt that my opinion counted, without being judged.”

    —Daniela, 15

    Jonathan

“My name is Jonathan. I am 14 years old, and I am in the eighth grade.

I dream of becoming a teacher. In my free time, I like to share with my family. The challenge that young people in my community face is the lack of attention from parents. It would be good if there were frequent seminars to support parents regarding their children.

Through Sponsor a School, I hope to see my school’s dreams realized, with several career options such as high school or commerce, and not only up to ninth grade – for that, we need more classrooms.”

    —Jonathan, 14

    Meet the director

“My name is Carlos, and I am the director of the Manuel Bonilla Basic Education Center. I can say that we are the best educational center in the municipality of Villanueva.

Our school’s biggest challenge is to improve infrastructure conditions since the perimeter fence is destroyed.

We have had to face several situations, such as being victim to. Our school has functioned as a shelter in times of emergency; for this reason, we’ve run out of electronic equipment and air conditioning equipment, such as fans. We’ve navigated this thanks to the contributions of parents and the management we’ve done with different organizations.

If we are able to get Sponsor a School to come to our school, I will tell them that their resources will be well managed and that we work based on results.”

    —Director Carlos
