About the school’s needs

The town of San José del Boquerón, in Honduras’s Cortés Department, has around 1,430 inhabitants. Townspeople there face daily challenges ranging from family disintegration to scarce economic resources, a lack of drinking water, and limited internet access. Collectively, these hardships limit opportunities for young people, including the 330 students at Centro de Educación Básica José Trinidad Cabañas.

We asked students at the school about their community. Alexandra, who is 14 years old, wanted her classmates to no longer be victims of violence. Marlon, also 14, hoped to see the area’s social stigma be erased.

Education is the way to get there. Your sponsorship of Centro de Educación Básica José Trinidad Cabañas will provide students with healthy, safe learning conditions through essential school improvements and extracurricular activities.

Help give the children of Centro de Educación Básica José Trinidad Cabañas the future they deserve.

    Meet the students

    Alexandra

“I’m Alexandra. I’m 14. My dream is to become a psychologist, and I like going to the gym.

I would like for young people in my community to overcome their fears. I would also like for them to no longer be the victims of violence.

I’d like to see my school have good air conditioning and a nice space where we can play.”

     —Alexandra, 14

    Marlon

“My name is Marlon, and I’m 14 years old. I’d like to become a lawyer. During my free time, I enjoy going to church and playing.

The biggest challenges that young people in my community face are problems related to alcohol. My heartfelt desire is for the young people to no longer have the stigma associated with living in zones that are far from the city.

At my school, I hope for a remodeled structure and decent restrooms.”

     —Marlon, 14

    Meet the principal

“I am Ruth Martinez, the principal of CEB José Trinidad Cabañas. At our institution, we are committed to delivering high-quality, comprehensive education, instilling knowledge and values in our students. We provide continuous support to students, who come from disintegrated homes with limited economic resources, and face challenges in their learning.

Our educational center has served as a refuge for people affected by disasters. On one occasion, we had to suspend classes when the lagoon overflowed and inundated the homes of residents. We successfully overcame this adversity through a collaborative effort and mutual support among community members.

Another challenge we confront is the migration of students.

Children and young people at our school deserve the opportunity to receive support in order to improve their educational conditions. We long to welcome more students and overcome—together—the challenges and obstacles that life presents them.”

     —Principal Ruth
