About the school’s needs

Choloma is the third most populated municipality in the country. The challenges faced in this area are crime, extortion, family disintegration, youth migration, lack of literacy and unemployment.

Despite being a maquila zone, the demand for employment is high due to its more than 600,000 inhabitants.

For the community, the school represents a foundation of support - a hope of formation for all the children and young people of the neighborhood. After 99 years, the school continues to provide the opportunity of education and educational heritage; it is respected by all the generations of students that have come before.

Help give the children of the Centro de Educación Básica José Trinidad Cabañas the future they deserve.

    Meet the students

    Victoria

“My name is Victoria, and I am 13 years old. I study at the Centro de Educación Básica José Trinidad Cabañas.

I want you to know that I am a sociable person. It is easy for me to make friends. I play soccer, and I like to exercise. I like to study, do my homework daily, and I love to spend time with my family, my cousins, my siblings and my parents.

I participate in extracurricular clubs; I have been in Storytelling, Art and Entre Jóvenes. The one that has caught my attention the most is the Entre Jóvenes Club, because we can socialize and talk about topics that we can’t talk about with our family due to lack of confidence.

When I become an adult, I would like to be a lawyer to defend the rights of others. I like justice and believe that we all have equal value.”

    —Victoria, 13

    Andrés

“My name is Andrés. I study at the Centro de Educación Básica José Trinidad Cabañas, and I’m 12 years old.

I have been in the extracurricular clubs for three years. I have participated in Art, English, Steam and Leadership. My favorite is mainly the Steam Club, because it’s helped me a lot with socializing. A great lesson and my biggest challenge was the creation of a model of a bridge, a case of architecture that was interesting.

Things I enjoy about this school are attending all the events and activities that Glasswing does, being in the community classroom, and attending sporting events. I want to learn more about space, Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity and other things. I want to learn about the culture of all the countries, the gastronomy of different countries, and the culture of the world.”

    —Andrés, 12

    Meet the director

“My name is Marixa, and I am the director of the José Trinidad Cabañas Basic Education Center.

The challenges we face are overcoming problems that students bring from home, as some of them are abandoned and are alone. Another challenge involves the young people who come from the Honduran Institute for Children and Family IHNFA; their behavior and grades must be reported.

We provide psychological care, improving the children’s sense of discipline and learning. My dream is that we become a bilingual public school, providing quality education.

One of the difficulties we have faced is that we had to suspend classes for two years during Covid-19. We have also had to be a permanent shelter when there are disasters. We have made it through with the help of God and the availability of all the actors.

In this educational center we also have special children who are given all the support possible. We try to give more than we have, and we organize ourselves based on what the government asks of us. We stand out for promoting culture, values, sports and providing recreational spaces for the students.

We promote inclusion and opportunities for all. We assure Sponsor a School that supporting this school is like sowing in fertile soil.”

    —Teacher Marixa
