About the community
Centro de Educación Básica José Castro López is a rural school located in the Copen Aldea community in San Pedro Sula. The community is in the Department of Cortés, known for being the country’s most populated department.
The challenges faced by the Copen Aldea community include access to clean drinking water, reliable transportation services, increased gang activity, and a lack of recreational spaces.
By sponsoring Centro de Educación Básica José Castro López, you will provide essential resources to its students. Your sponsorship means everything from a new playground to new computers and classroom supplies.
Help give the children of Centro de Educación Básica José Castro López the future they deserve.

“My name is Carlos, and I am 12 years old. I’ve dreamed of being a soldier since I was little. In my free time, I like to play soccer with my friends and help with household activities.
My dream is to be able to take care of my country and protect young people from gangs and crime.
The challenges that young people in my community face are vices and being recruited by gangs. Being a soldier, I would get to set an example for the young people in my community and advise them to get involved in activities that help them become good people.
With the support of Sponsor a School, I would like to see my school painted, with more furniture, a soccer field, and new soccer balls. For the safety of all the students, I would like there to be grating in the gutters to avoid accidents.”
—Carlos, 12

I think one of the problems that young people here face is young women getting pregnant at an early age. Also, boys get involved in gangs and vices because they do not have the opportunity to continue their studies or finish school.
I would like to help girls and adolescents by giving health talks, and with the support of an organization, I would like to be able to set up a clinic in my community to help people with limited resources. With the support of Sponsor a School, I would like to see my school with a decent gazebo where we can eat our snacks, new paint, a playground, a soccer field, and a usable computer room and classrooms.”

For Hurricanes Eta and Iota, the school functioned as a shelter. Houses were flooded, the children’s amusement park was destroyed by the hurricane, and there was a loss of employment, especially among those who worked in the fields and agriculture. We moved forward with some help from different organizations.
We are an educational center with a computer area, library, and three classrooms with 80% pedagogical conditions, but we need more teachers for the technological classroom and library. The school is open to the community, and the community is open to the school. The residents greatly respect the educational center since it is a place of recreation and civic events, and they support its maintenance.
Girls and boys need the support of Sponsor a School to develop abilities, skills, attitudes, and aptitudes, since they are developing meaningful learning. Extracurricular classes also complement their development, which is very important. I hope that we will have the third year of the cycle, and that all the students will learn to love reading and mathematics.”
