About the school’s needs

The school is located in a community in the municipality of Choloma in San Pedro Sula. Garbage management has become necessary, since keeping the streets clean and avoiding garbage around the school walls is very important. There is a lot of indifference among residents about depositing garbage in respective containers. Insecurity in the area is also a daily problem, and the school’s students are affected.

Most of the school-age population is alone at home. With there being little to no parent presence or support, many children do not feel the responsibility to come to school and fulfill their education duties.

For the community, the school represents a learning space. The students see it as their second home and the parents do as well; they have an openness toward the community cafés, attending enthusiastically since the space creates a positive experience. Students perceive the school as a place to find a way out of problems.

Help give the children of the CEB Marcelino Pineda López, Colonia Primavera, the future they deserve.

    Meet the students

    Josseelin

“I’m Josseelin. I’m in fourth grade at Marcelino Pineda López School. I enjoy drawing, especially cartoons in the emoji style – the ones that smile but with their eyes closed.

I like to be in clubs; in the computer club I have learned a lot since I was in third grade. I’m also in an art club. I really like it because they teach various techniques, such as making plasticine figures, and we have fun.

At my school I like the Aula Club; here I feel good because it’s quiet, I like to read, and it’s cooler and there’s not so much noise. One dream I have is to be a teacher, because they are good people who teach children. I admire my teacher Wendy for the way she teaches us.”

    —Josseelin, 12

    Leonel

“My name is Leonel. I’m 9 years old, and I’m at Marcelino Pineda López School. I’m in the Storytelling Club. I like to listen to stories, like the story of Little Red Riding Hood.

I want to learn English – that’s why I’m in that club. I’m going to travel.

I like my school. I enjoy recess, playing ball and eating with my friends, but I would like to have more games at school, like a slide, to have fun with my friends.

I also like the clubs because I learn and everything is quiet; there is no yelling. When I’m at home I fix my bike, but when I grow up I would like to be a car mechanic.”

    —Leonel, 9

    Meet the director

“My name is María, and I am the director of the Marcelino Pineda López Basic Education Center. Our biggest challenge at the school level is to reduce the dropout rate due to migration; since this year, 27 students have left. Our aim is to mitigate migration to maintain the enrollment with which we started.

Some time ago, we had an incident with a student who was killed by a firearm. The violence in the area has taken its toll on us; we had the unfortunate situation of the death of a student half a block from the school.

We’ve also had infrastructure challenges. The rains affect the entrance to the school, which tends to fill with water and prevents access.

My dream is to maintain the trust that parents and children have in the school, and to maintain the clubs, since young people are very interested. In addition to providing a learning space, we provide a safe place for the children and youth.

Through Sponsor a School, I hope that we can continue to provide psychological support to the students and, above all, continue the clubs that are taught here. I hope that our educational center remains beautiful, accessible and spacious.”

    —Director María
