About the school’s needs

The community of La Esperanza in the municipality of Villa Nueva, Guatemala, faces multiple risk factors for its inhabitants. One of them is violence among young people from an early age, which leads to school dropout due to bad influences and threats from marginalized groups.

Scarcity of resources, violence and lack of interest in education, as well as lack of family support, are common challenges for many families in this community. In addition to violence, they also face risks such as flooding and deteriorating educational and residential infrastructure.

With the support of some parents, the community has managed to overcome these challenges, but continues to face obstacles in education and in improving living conditions. In summary, this community is characterized by a lack of job opportunities, security and access to educational resources.

Help give the children of the Instituto Nacional de Educación Básica INEB La Esperanza the future they deserve.

    Meet the students

    Caterin

“Hello, my name is Caterin and I am 14 years old. My biggest dream is to graduate in criminalistics and humanities. In my free time I enjoy playing the violin, reading, studying and playing with my friends.

In my community we face a lack of employment and many young people do not have the opportunity to study due to economic limitations. I would love to see young people receive more support from their parents to be able to advance in their studies.

I would also like to see my school renovated, with new windows, better lighting in the classrooms, improved walls, new roofs, improved bathrooms, renovated floors and more school equipment, including a toy library”.

    Dereck

“Hi, I’m Dereck and I’m 14 years old. My biggest dream is to become a responsible adult with a family and become a lawyer. I have realized that in my community we face poverty, crime, lack of resources and health problems.

I would love to provide emotional and economic support so that young people have better stability in their lives.

I would like to see my school better painted, with a lot more colors, new windows, good lighting, a bigger building and happy students”.

    Meet a teacher

“I am Susana, director of the National Institute of Basic Education (INEB) La Esperanza. In our institution, we are collaborative and united. Although some people may think we are violent, in reality we are peaceful, competitive and persevering, and we have a deep love for school.

Those who wish to support this wonderful institution should consider our young people, who just need a little push to progress. We will take advantage of any help they give us, as our students are persevering and will use every resource to improve their living conditions. The school is a fundamental pillar for our community.

My dream is to see a school that meets the basic needs of our students and has all the necessary resources to provide a quality education. I want students to be motivated to explore and learn, becoming agents of change in their lives and transforming their community.

Our space is where students can be themselves: express themselves, play and share. It’s a safe environment where they feel protected and valued”.

    —Teacher Susana
